For the collaboration between Integrative Environmental Science and Global Problems, these students examined Al Reyadah and the Susquehanna Watershed Restoration, two sustainability projects based in the UAE and the USA respectively. Students discussed the ways the 2 projects address SDGs 10, 13 and 16, and the roles the government, corporations and civic society need to play to ensure the projects’ success as well as the implementation of further efforts towards sustainability.

Students of Modern Media Translation and English Listening and Speaking for Non-native Speakers explored the urgency and salience of working towards SDG 2. This SDG, which aims for food security and zero hunger, was specifically applied to the context of the Palestinian hunger crisis in the wake of the events of October 7. This project illuminated the extent to which Gaza’s food sources have either been destroyed or depleted, and the action civic society can take to facilitate work towards re-establishing food security in Palestine.

For the collaboration between Development, Human Rights, and Transnational Injustices and History, Culture and Society of the United Arab Emirates, students prepared a comprehensive presentation on the 8th UN Sustainable Development Goal, focusing on decent work and economic growth, while comparing the progress of India and Switzerland in achieving these targets.

This podcast discusses how climate injustice disproportionately affects marginalized communities. The specific communities addressed in this project are Palestine and the traditional territories of Indigenous peoples in the USA.

This investigation into Manbat and Dickinson Farm is another example of a final project completed as part of the collaboration between Integrative Environmental Science and Global Problems. Students examined how these two initiatives directly promote reduced inequalities, climate action and good health and well-being. These two projects also serve as a testament to each university’s investment in sustainable practices. Dickinson Farm involves students, graduate apprentices and volunteers. Manbat runs a stall on the AUS campus every Wednesday.

This presentation addressed the importance of understanding the ways in which pollution hinders advancement towards SDG 15, which pertains to protecting, restoring and promoting sustainable use of life on land. Students discussed viable solutions to counter current pollution rates, as well as existing efforts in the USA and UAE, including the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park which is currently the largest single-site solar park in the world.
Professor Salma 2022: Group 2
This report, for the collaboration between Development, Human Rights, and Transnational Injustices and History, Culture and Society of the United Arab Emirates, documents Mexico’s and Iran’s progress on SDG 5, which pertains to gender equality. The report traces the varying initiatives each country has taken to improve women’s social and political rights, whilst also addressing problem areas that still need attention.

This podcast similarly discusses climate injustice as well as the climate disasters that particularly impact disenfranchised groups due to location, social inequality and lack of resources. Students outline how efforts towards sustainability have to go hand in hand with combatting climate injustice.
